2. What this site is for
StateRates publishes general reference information about utility rates in the United States. It is provided for informational purposes only. It is not financial, legal, engineering or professional advice, and it is not a quotation or an offer of service from any utility or energy supplier.
Nothing on this site creates a professional relationship between you and us. Decisions about your energy supply, equipment, or contracts should be made on the basis of your own bill, your own utility's tariff, and where appropriate, professional advice.
3. Accuracy
We compile figures from public federal data and take care to present them accurately, with sources cited. We do not warrant that the site is free of errors, that figures are current at the moment you read them, or that source data has not been revised since retrieval. Rate data is inherently backward-looking and subject to revision by the publishing agency.
Averages published here are statewide aggregates. They are not the rate any individual household is billed. See the methodology for what the figures include and what they cannot tell you.
4. Use of the data
The underlying rate figures are derived from U.S. federal government data, which is in the public domain. You may use those figures freely.
Our compiled dataset, including the derived values we calculate (rankings, year-over-year changes, comparisons against the national average) and our exports, may be used for any purpose including commercial use, with attribution to StateRates and a link where the medium allows. Attribution to the U.S. Energy Information Administration is the correct citation for the underlying figures.
5. Editorial content
The written analysis, explanations and page copy on this site are original work and are protected by copyright. You may quote reasonable extracts with attribution and a link. You may not republish substantial portions, reproduce pages wholesale, or use the content to train systems in a way that reproduces it verbatim without permission.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use automated tools in a way that imposes an unreasonable load on the site;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the site or its infrastructure;
- interfere with the display of advertising, or with the operation of the site for other users;
- misrepresent our data, for example by presenting a state average as a rate available for purchase.
We publish machine-readable exports precisely so that scraping is unnecessary. Please use them.
7. Advertising
This site displays third-party advertising. We do not endorse advertised products or services, and we are not responsible for advertisers' content, offers or conduct. Transactions you enter into with an advertiser are between you and that advertiser.
8. External links
We link to third-party sites including government agencies, regulators and utilities. We are not responsible for their content, availability or practices, and a link is not an endorsement.
9. Disclaimer of warranties
The site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special or exemplary damages, or for any loss of profits, data or business, arising from your use of or inability to use this site, or from reliance on any information published here, including any decision made on the basis of a rate figure or estimate.
Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. Changes take effect when posted, and the effective date above will be updated. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
