Privacy policy

A plain description of what is collected on this site, by whom, and what you can do about it.

Summary

StateRates is a static website. We do not ask you to create an account, we do not run a newsletter, and the tools on this site run entirely in your browser. We ourselves collect no personal information from you directly.

We do serve advertising through Google AdSense, and Google and its advertising partners set cookies and process data in the course of doing so. That is the substantive privacy consideration on this site, and most of this page is about it.

What we collect directly

Nothing that identifies you. Specifically:

  • No account registration, login or profile.
  • No newsletter or mailing list.
  • No server-side logging of personal data by us. This site is served as static files; standard access logs may be retained briefly by our hosting provider for security and abuse prevention, and may include IP address, user agent and requested URL.
  • Calculator inputs are never transmitted. The kilowatt-hour figure and state selection you enter into the bill calculator are processed in your browser and are not sent to us or to anyone else.
  • One local preference. If you use the light/dark theme toggle, your choice is stored in your browser's local storage under the key sr-theme. It never leaves your device, and clearing your browser data removes it.

Advertising: Google AdSense

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google is a third-party vendor and uses cookies and similar technologies to serve ads.

  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.
  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to our sites and/or other sites on the internet.
  • Data processed in the course of serving ads may include your IP address, device and browser information, the pages you view on this site, and advertising identifiers.

You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You may also opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices or the NAI opt-out page.

Google's own description of how it uses data from sites that use its services is published at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland

Where required, a consent management platform will ask for your consent before non-essential cookies are set, including advertising cookies. You can decline, and you can change your choice at any time through the consent controls on this site. Declining advertising consent means you will see non-personalised advertising rather than no advertising.

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • access the personal data held about you;
  • have inaccurate data corrected;
  • have your data erased;
  • restrict or object to processing, including profiling for advertising purposes;
  • data portability;
  • withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing carried out before withdrawal;
  • lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

Because we hold no personal data about you ourselves, requests concerning advertising data should be directed to Google, which is the controller for that processing. We will help you route a request if you contact us.

The legal basis for advertising cookies is your consent. The legal basis for the brief retention of server access logs is our legitimate interest in operating the site securely.

If you are in California

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, to delete it, to correct it, to opt out of its sale or sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.

We do not sell personal information for money. The use of advertising cookies to serve interest-based ads may constitute "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising under the CPRA. You can opt out by using the consent controls on this site, by enabling a Global Privacy Control signal in your browser (which we honour where transmitted), or through the Google Ads Settings link above.

Residents of other U.S. states with comprehensive privacy laws have comparable rights and the same mechanisms apply.

Children

This site is a general-audience reference resource and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through this site, contact us and we will act on it.

External links

We link to government agencies, regulators and utilities. Those sites have their own privacy policies and we are not responsible for their practices.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially we will update the effective date above and, for significant changes, note them on the site. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
