Every dataset on this site

Nine datasets from six agencies. Everything published here is either one of these figures or arithmetic performed on them, and the arithmetic is set out on the methodology page. We do not survey, we do not estimate, and we do not buy data from anyone.

All nine are works of the United States government or, in Freddie Mac's case, published free for public use. None of them require a licence to republish. Each page on this site names the series it draws on and the date the file was retrieved, so any figure can be checked against the original.

How to cite

For the figures themselves, cite the agency rather than us. For electricity that means: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A: Average Price of Electricity to Ultimate Customers by End-Use Sector, by State, May 2026. The equivalent citation for every other series is in the table above.

For our derived values, meaning rankings, year-over-year changes and difference from the national average, cite StateRates and link to the page you used. Those calculations are described in full on the methodology page.

Reference material used in editorial text

Beyond the rate figures, the explanatory sections on each state page draw on public regulatory and market information. Where a factual claim is specific and checkable, it comes from one of the following categories of source:

  • State public utility commission dockets and orders. Rate cases, default-service procurement results, and approved multi-year rate plans. Each state's commission publishes these; they are the authoritative record of what a utility is allowed to charge and why.
  • Regional transmission organisation market reports. PJM, MISO, ISO New England, NYISO, ERCOT, SPP and CAISO each publish capacity auction results, market monitor reports and state-of-the-market analyses.
  • EIA supplementary series. The Electric Power Annual, Electric Sales Revenue and Average Price, and the State Energy Data System, used for generation mix and market structure context.
  • Utility integrated resource plans. Filed with state commissions, these set out planned retirements and replacement capacity, which is the best available guide to where a state's rates are heading.
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission filings. Used for wholesale market rules, transmission cost allocation and interregional disputes.

Market structure descriptions, covering which utility serves where, whether a state has retail choice and which balancing authority a state sits in, reflect the position as of the retrieval date above. These change; if you find one that is out of date, please tell us.

Machine-readable exports

The compiled dataset is available as CSV and JSON, with the same fields used to build every page on the site. The JSON export includes the source metadata block so that the provenance travels with the data.
